Video of the Week – The Robert Rodriguez 10 Minute Film School – Part 2

29 Aug

Part 2 -

This video is old school and could be considered a classic to the indie film world.  It originally appeared as a featurette on the El Mariachi Special Edition DVD and offers excellent DIY filmmaking techniques and inspiration.  Although Rodriguez has made a bunch of films, some arguably over indulgent and self serving, El Mariachi remains a one of his best, an “overnight” classic that took him years to make.  Think what you will about Robert Rodriguez, but as a writer, producer, director, DP, editor, special effects artist & composer, he is a force to be reckoned with and can run circles around most filmmakers.  I still live by a famous quote of his…and I paraphrase “If you want to be a filmmaker, say your a filmmaker and go make films”  Simple right?  Point being, you can do and be just about anything if you embrace it, own it and create it, especially in film.  Now as to how good or “successful” one may be is up for debate, but that is beside the point really.  Making films for the sake of making films is just as important as making a living from making films.  I would obviously choose the later, but there is something about creating for the sake of creating.  Watch this first installment of 10 Minute Film School and you are well on your way.

P.S. – read “Rebel Without a Crew” about his experience making and selling El Mariachi.  Great read.

The Coen Brothers talk film with Noah Baumbauch

14 Jun

Most of the world is familiar with the Coen Brothers and their films.  Around M8M Studios the Coens are legends.  Anyone who makes Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O’ Brother Where Art Thou? and True Grit can do nothing else and be great in our book.

Some of the world may know Noah Baumbach.  He has several films under his belt and is a stylistic force to be reckoned with.

This video has all three dudes…talking.  Enjoy.
